Reducing particle dimensions of chunkwood

Presents and compares the chunkwood sizes obtainable with the USDA Forest Service prototype wood chunker using four different blade configurations, and the results of further chunkwood reduction with three methods totally separate from the chunking process.

Populus 'Tristis' trees grown under short-rotation, intensive culture were sampled and chunked in a prototype experimental wood chunking machine. Data presented describe the character of the trees chunked, the energy and power requirements for chunking, and the chunking rates Specific energy requirements for chunking Populus 'Tristis' are compared with chunking and chipping common Lake States species from natural stands.

Governer Bella Angara-Catillo, Mayor Tubigan and the Dinalugan Municipal Council are proud to cut the ribbon on the first gasifier for rural power electrification in the Philippines this month.

The 250kw Gasifier is welcomed by the community of Dinalungan, Aurora as an alternative to expensive diesel power in the area. Diesel power in the local communities are struggling to provide power for more than 6 hours per day.

Meva Innovation AB has been working on a new VIPP (Vortex Intensive Power Process) cyclone gasifier and gas cleaner. They have had a 500kw CHP Pilot plant operating since 2009, and are building a small CHP plant for a district heating (utility) which will be commissioned in September.

Charcoal Quality

Your comments on the charcoal issue is right. This information is for the people who would be interested in charcoal making.

Not properly dried wood will never yield more than 20% charcoal and most of the pieces will be broken. Charcoal which is not broken in pieces, burn longer and gives more energy. In the market what is called Grade A charcoal, brings 30 to 40% more price than lump charcoal. What is most important today is try to make charcoal as clean as possible environmentally, even in traditional kilns.

1. What is the current population of your operating gasifiers?

From the 17 (including Gustaf’s) sold at about one / year, 7 of the later ones are still in operation, but this will hopefully change drastically once my comments in 7. (below) materialize.
