Hello everybody,
I learned from Johannes about this forum. Just like Johannes, I did a PhD at Paul Scherrer Institut and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in the field of Biomass Gasification. I wish I had known this forum back then because one of the goals of my thesis was to come up with a fixed bed gasifier in the 5 to 30 kWth scale which would operate at least one week non-stop. Fortunately, I did succeed in the end as you can read in my thesis.

Since I began working with producer gas in 1976, the question of it's quality, and how to measure it in a way that clarifies it's purity, has never in my mind, been answered by gas analysis. I have seen many gas analysis presented to prove a gasifiers function, and therefore justify claims of how this gas can be used, but this can hide a multitude of problems within the gas making phenomena.

Abstract: An open top down draft gas producer with divorced fuel hopper was constructed and tested. The design progressed through many changes until a stable device emerged.
